I changed the oil in my used 2005 XL1200C when I first got it. Put in 3.5 quarts like the manual said. Went for a 2 mile ride. Came home and saw a trail of oil down the drive way. Parked it and oil continued to flow out all over the place. There was a puddle under the bike 3' in diameter.Look directly below and slightly behind the seat underneath the frame to find the oil drain plug. Use a ratchet and 5/8-inch socket to remove the drain plug. Once loose, finish removing the plug by hand to avoid dropping it into the oil pan. Remove the oil reservoir cap to increase oil flow.

The HD manual spec is the same for my 2004 softail. When you simply drain the primary without removing the outer cover, 3-4 oz. of oil remains in the primary case.
