It's not a zombie infection unless you actually got bitten or scratched by a zombie. Bites are guaranteed to turn you, scratches have a 25% chance IIRC. Debug testing has found that wound infection has no bearing on healing speed. Infection just causes pain which makes your character less effective in combat.
