Derelicts are really only good to run, imo, once you have a freighter. The only loot drop that is worth the effort is the exclusive cargohold expansion or the tech upgrades( both for freighters) that drop. Otherwise all the other loot in them is basically just to kind of make up for the cost of the transponder thing you have to buy.
