Hi all, Curious if anyone has explored tailgate pad options for the R1T. I find this the most convenient way to shuttle 3-5 mountain bikes at a time, especially with a RTT on the roof. None of these thoughts are new. The pads don't fit very well and unless someone designs a Rivian specific one I don't think any pad will be that great. The tailgate is too thick and the middle tailgate panel interferes as shown in the pics above. The middle panel also makes installation more time consuming.
It doesn't look very padded along the top of the tailgate compared to various bike-company offerings (that don't fit well because of how fat the tailgate is). And even if it were, bikes don't hang well on the tailgate because of how fat it is. The distance between down tube and fork is not nearly enough for the bike to sit down properly. The entire point of buying a tailgate pad is so I don't have to use additional things (bungy cords, tie downs, etc) to secure my bike. Every other pad on the market works just fine - how could Rivian fail their design in the 1 single place the bike actually contacts the tailgate pad?Yikes. That looks like the mesh lets a ton of silty soil slip between the pad and the paint. That's something to be mindful of with all pads, whether the have mesh for light bar or not. Highway driving / rain. On to the road-trip (TL;DR : driving from Bay Area to LA - via Paso Robles / Carrizo Plain) . I had no issues with the tonneau cover on the highway (~70 mph) - stayed in place, no flapping etc.. I recently came across this Rivian R1T with a couple of mountain bikes mounted out back and thought it would be great to see what everyone's setup is like. Using Yakima high speed fork mounts on Rivian cross bars. Works great. Or if you like, a simple moving pad across the tailgate.
