I think Lil Gun is too fast of a burning powder for the 45-70. It is a high pressure powder. If you load it to little you cause a high pressure problem, if you load it to much you cause a high pressure problem. Hodgdon does not even list a load with it. According burn rate charts, some have Accurate 1680 closer to the 4227s than the 4198s, while others have it closer to the 4198s than the 4227s. I did some primer based testing today and came to two conclusions: 1. standard primers produce softer fouling. 2. at least with 70 grs of KIK 2F, federal magnum primers produce the best groups (by a long shot!). 3. standard large rifle primers produced the worst groups compared to magnum primers.

I would like to use a BP substitute, mostly because of the UK laws about storing black powder. To use black powder I would have to get an explosives license and a special box to store the powder in. Some swear by black powder, others use Pyrodex or 777. This load has been around for more then 50 yrs. Use it with a 300gr cast for varmints and kids plinking in any 45-70 that is tight and safe to shoot including the original civil war era trap doors. You have to match the powder for the job.
