Maybe the same thing happened to LV-426 long ago as well. As far as the Space Jockey/Engineer debate, it could be that the Space Jockey was a member of a long extinct, progenitor race that dabbled in genetics for whatever reason. Maybe they stumbled upon a natural form of the Xenomorph and reverse engineered it's DNA to create the pathogen.
