So, having no wedges and forcing the game to check your inventory for them should 'break' the process. Now the question is whether simply not having a smelter wedge was enough to 'break' the process and reset the idol, or if having no wedges and attempting to stake another idol is what did it.

Be sure to take out the Ashen Idol after defeating the first one since she can heal these phantoms. If you reach the Ashen Idol before the first invader fully spawns you can take it out. His attacks wont hurt you while inserting the Smelter Wedge. This makes it easier to kill the first invader.
