You don't need to worry about saving Smelter Wedges if you explore everywhere before fighting the boss. If I'm not mistaken, there are 12 Smelter Wedges in total (6 at the beginning, 4 in a chest, 1 with Fume Knight and the last one in the memory of Sir Alonne).
