Haha. Yeah the game doesn't do an entirely good job on telling you where to go first. My first time playing I went to a place called New Londo Ruins, far below Firelink. For help, look towards the large castle looking structure from the Firelink bonfire. You should see stairs run along a mountain towards it and a couple of hollows.
