Yes, the HomeKit gateway does not require a subscription either, it just cost $60 for the hub. I have never tried the proximity stuff with HomeKit. I normally just tell my watch to open the correct garage door and to unlock the door going into the house as well. I try to keep all my stuff commercial now in case I kick the bucket.
