Subaru (Outback), Lexus (Rx), and Tesla (S/X), in my experience, do very well handling 80 and Truckee areas. Like Das said, you're pretty much limited to staying somewhere in South Lake Tahoe. There's plenty of motels in the area but prices are usually around $80 a night. I have a season pass to Heavenly, North*, and Kirkwood because of a deal, but Sierra is still my favorite mountain in the area.
